Never Doubt

During World War II, a US marine was separated from his unit on a Pacific Island. The fighting had been intense, and in all the smoke and crossfire, he had lost touch with his companions.

All alone in the jungle, he could hear the enemy soldiers coming in his direction. Scrambling quickly for cover, he carefully found his way up a high ridge where several small caves in the rock were. Quickly and quietly, he crawled inside one of the caves. Although safe for the moment, he realized that once the enemy soldiers looking for him came up the ridge, they would quickly search all the caves and he would be killed.

As he waited, he quietly prayed, “Lord, if it is your will, please protect me. Help me to get out of this alive.”

After praying, he lay quietly listening to the enemy begin to draw close. He prayed again, “Please Lord, protect me.” Suddenly, his eyes focused on something near the entryway. A small little spider began to build a web, covering the front of his cave. As he watched, listening to the enemy searching for him, the spider layered strand after strand of web across the opening of the cave.

"Ha,”  He thought, “What I need is a brick wall, and God has sent me a spider building a flimsy little web.”

As the enemy drew closer he watched from the darkness of his hideout and could see them searching one cave after another. As they came to his cave, he got ready to make his last stand. To his amazement, however, after glancing in the direction of his cave, they moved on. Suddenly, he realized that with the spider web over the entrance, his cave looked as if no one had entered for quite a while. He sat there in shock and amazement, suddenly feeling very guilty for his lack of faith in God.

"Lord, forgive me," prayed the young man. "I doubted your power, and you knew that a spider’s web can so be much stronger than a wall.”

We all face times of great trouble. When we do, it is so easy to forget the victories that God would work in our lives, sometimes in the most surprising ways. Just as Nehemiah reminded the people of Israel when they faced the task of rebuilding Jerusalem, "In God, we will have success!”

Let’s remember to trust God always, no matter what happens.

The Price of Freedom - Part 1

Jumping inside the boxcar, they took one last look at the sunlight before being sealed shut inside their metal prison.  Simon and Wesley had illegally left Romania in order to escape mandatory service in the military, where they would have been beaten, perhaps fatally, for refusing to serve on Sabbaths.  Despite several close calls with the police in Romania, Hungary, and Austria, Simon managed to cross three boarder crossings on foot and escaped to Italy where he joined his brother Stefan, who had illegally taken refuge there after being cruelly beaten in the Romanian military.  Once in Italy, Simon had been captured by the police, who interrogated and beat him.  However, Providence intervened when he could not locate his ID, which meant they could not ship him back to Romania.  He was released and given 15 days to leave the country.  Having no place to go, he remained illegally for nearly two years.  Meanwhile, his friend Wesley back i...

Ruth's Sacrifice

But then suddenly, your husband and his brother dies, leaving you and your sister-in-law widows. Within the next several weeks, your aged mother in-law decides to go home, back to her country.      The journey will take her seven-ten days on foot. She is determined to go, and there is nothing you can do to change her mind.      You and your sister-in-law love your mother-in-law so dearly, that you both insist on going with her to help her and to protect her and to keep her company. But weeping, your mother-in-law implores you each to return to your mother’s houses. Her words convey that, if you went with her, you must expect to remain forever homeless and a stranger.      Your sister in-law, with bitter sorrow, tenderly kisses your mother-in-law for the last time, an...
